About Us

History

The Grace Impact Development Centre, Inc (GIDC) was established in February of 2017 and exists to create, organize, incubate and fund programming in the areas of affordable housing, workforce development, health and education for at-risk populations throughout Berkeley County, SC. It was the vision of Grace Reformed Episcopal Church to create a community centre that would serve as a hub for resources. During the same time, Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County (HFHBC) was working in a neighbourhood adjacent to the church building homes and supporting a community association. Recognizing there was a shared vision, Grace Reformed Episcopal Church seeded funds to incorporate GIDC as a Community Development Corporation (CDC). One of the first ventures was a partnership with HFHBC and the Wall Street Community Association to secure a Lowe’s matching grant of $75,000 to build Community’s Hope Impact Centre (CHIC).
CHIC is currently thriving as a hub for services in the vulnerable Wall Street community. It is staffed by our Director (Shelah Durant) and a host of community volunteers. In a short time, it has successfully developed partnerships to offer senior health programs (in partnership with Roper St. Francis), youth and senior vocational programs (in partnership with the American College of the Building Arts), financial literacy programs (in partnership with Wood forest Bank) and a thriving food pantry serving over 250 families and 600 individuals per month.
